  4.     Your article on AIDS notes that "new drugs are giving hope but
  5. also raising difficult questions" about treatment (MEDICINE, June
  6. 19). You used a photo of me captioned, "Callen has fought the
  7. disease for seven years," followed by an implicit but and the
  8. sentence, "The bill for medical care will be staggering." Do you
  9. question whether my life is worthy of the meager federal AIDS
  10. research efforts? As someone who each day faces the very real
  11. possibility of early death, "merely postponing (it) by a few
  12. years," as you so glibly say, is precious beyond measure. I am also
  13. offended by your reference to irresponsible sexual activity by AIDS
  14. victims. In my work as an AIDS activist, I have met hundreds,
  15. perhaps thousands, of people with AIDS, and I am convinced the vast
  16. majority have sex safely and responsibly.
